Madison Square \ Park

Project Description:

Despite its name, Madison Square Park as it exists today is more park than square – bounded by fence and street. The street, plaza, and park are different and clearly defined. The alteration and re-appropriation of streets by Jeanette Sadik-Khan has successfully given space back to pedestrians with temporary and tactical interventions, but what’s next? This proposal seeks to further develop and more closely connect these spaces by erasing the traditional boundaries of street, plaza, and park. Square\Park reconfigures these typologies by changing traffic flows, merging or hybridizing the traditional formal structures and surfaces of each typology, and maintaining culturally valued park elements while changing the rules for the park.
