North Christian Church Landscape Conservation Management Plan

Project Description:

As one of the most important Modernist churches in the United States, North Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana is a long-standing, masterful example of how design excellence can elevate the quality of life in a community. The church was designed by Eero Saarinen, landscape by Dan Kiley, and interiors by Alexander Girard. The Conservation Management Plan comes together as the Columbus community examines a dwindling church congregation and contemplates the past, present, and future of the building and landscape of North Christian Church. The CMP employs a methodology of consisting of fieldwork, archive review, historic assessment, and engagement with key stakeholders to offer ways to honor the design intent and restore historic characteristics of the landscape, while offering the opportunity to think critically about the role of the landscape in the Columbus community and the state of Modern design today.
