Rebuild by Design (work completed at Sasaki*)

*Work completed at Sasaki. Nina Chase led the RFQ submission and was a member of the multi-stage concept design team while employed as a project Landscape Architect at Sasaki.

Project Description:

An initiative of the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, Rebuild by Design was a competition that asked the design community to envision solutions to increase resilience across the Sandy-affected region. Leveraging nontraditional partnerships among designers, scientists, the local communities, and the federal government, Rebuild by Design developed resilience solutions that are locally contextual, but also regionally scalable. The team’s proposal—selected as one of 10 from the 148 proposals submitted from around the world—focused on resiliency for the Jersey Shore. The vision for an overall framework for the Jersey Shore was built upon one of the Jersey Shore’s most valuable assets: the beach. Extensive community engagement (including a parade), rigorous research and risk assessment led to three specific proposals to address the Jersey Shore’s unique ecological beach typologies. The final plans married each ecological asset with a community’s cultural icon for design solutions that were sustainable and resilient.
